What to do in an Emergency Situation
Following our checklists for what to do in natural disaster emergency situations, here are checklists for emergency management preparedness during man made disasters.
Blackouts
- Listen to emergency updates and news using a battery operated radio
- Never use candles during a black out, only use a flash light
- It is best to unplug all your electrical appliances until a steady power supply is back in place
- Avoid unnecessary car travel, streetlights and traffic signals will be affected and can cause a hazard
Chemical Incidents
- Keep all chemicals out of reach of small children
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- Never put hazardous chemicals into drink bottles or food containers
- Call the emergency services immediately if suspect chemical poisoning or burns
- Be aware of the symptoms of chemical or toxic poisoning and how to respond
Terrorism
- Report any suspicious behavior or unusual packages immediately
- If ordered to evacuate by an emergency official do so immediately
- Get away from the source of danger straight away, this includes explosions, falling debris and chemicals
- Monitor news bulletins or emergency announcements using a battery controlled radio
- If a disaster situation occurs help any injured people and give first aid.
- Check on any of your neighbors who are disabled or elderly
- Have a communication plan in place to check on your family members and ensure they are safe and well
